Over the past year or so we have periodically published web design collections and inspirational showcases from the most popular and important design categories. In total there are 14 different and varied categories or styles and within each category there are 50 carefully chosen web designs (that is a total of 700 web designs

). We have called this ‘complete’ inspirational collection the Web Design Style Series

In total the entire collection has had just over 5,000 Delicious saves, and as such this post was created. Due to its popularity we felt it may be useful to have a central hub for the entire collection and make it easier for you to find the inspiration you are looking for quickly and painlessly.

The scenario above would never happen in the real world – these types of contracts would never be handed to an individual designer, they would always be awarded to a larger and well established design company. This size of project would usually involve a huge team of designers, developers, usability professionals and marketing experts. The magazine style within web design are traditionally web sites that are content heavy, and by content we mean mainly text and minimal images, that display there content in blocks or columns of headings with a small excerpt that leads to the full article.
Unlike other web design styles that can use larger images to compliment the design, the Magazine style is limited to being designed within the parameters that the content (namely, the text and the occasional thumbnail) dictates, and that is were the design problems lie. How do you design a web site that is content heavy and make it visual eye candy?

If we look at some of the biggest names in web apps and services and ask the question, what do they have in common? Have a look at Google Search, Twitter, Delicious or to a lesser extent Flickr, and ask the questions, how did they become so popular? What distinguishes them from there competitors? The answer is simplicity. They are all memorable because they are easy to use, learn and understand and of course, they are backed up by a powerful tool as well. When you arrive at each site the function that they perform is clearly defined, they use basic navigation that everyone can understand and you can very quickly perform tasks.

There is no clear and defined winning design formula to a popular web app or service, just guidelines. Nor is there a typical design style for you to follow, as this showcase unintentionally proves. 50 Minimally Designed Web Sites

The most important factor for minimal to work well, as it should be with all design styles (but, not always the case), is the content. Without good writing or a strong portfolio, the style has no impact and the web design looks cheap. And that is the key to minimal, in the hands of a skilled web designer, they know that the site design has to accentuate the content, and the content, in return, accentuates the web design.
Creating an effective minimal web design, at first thought, would seem to be the cheaper, easier and quicker option to merely throw up a site That is most definitely not the case. Knowing what elements to strip out of a page while still maintaining usability, is just one of the the many skills you will need to successfully build a minimal web design.

The first thing that springs to mind when thinking about large photography backgrounds within web design are of simple photographers portfolio website or even that of a design company. Upon researching this article, the surprising thing was that this type of background does not seem to have any limitations, it is equally suited to ecommerce sites, restaurant sites, web design agencies.. basically all types of web sites, as you will see from the collection below.

There is only thing all of the sites from this post have in common, and that is good, creative and professional photography. The photograph itself is the focus of the site, with each having an overlay of content to bring the site alive and make it functional. It’s got client-side data binding to make for rapid iterations, meaning changes are easy to achieve without having to rebuild everything from the ground up.

For the most part, Flash has always been the standard for showing video on the web (think of YouTube and Vimeo), supported in all browsers with the only exception being the iPhone and most recently, the iPad.
But now, with HTML5, the new video tag is creeping into our lives and opening up many new, exciting and standardized media possibilities for web developers.

To help you understand and get the most from this new tag, we have listed below a selection of the best HTML5 video libraries, frameworks, toolkits and players.

Kaltura HTML5 Video & Media JavaScript Library

have developed a full HTML5 Video Library (it is being used by Wikipedia) that works in ALL

major browsers, including IE, by using a unique ‘fallback’ mechanism – not only for the format of the video that is played, but also for the actual video player version that is used.

A base component of the Kaltura library bridges the gap between the few browsers that don't support HTML5, by falling back to its underlining Flash player.
It has been developed with HTML, CSS and jQuery, and with built in support for the jQuery Themeroller

, styling is amazingly easy and flexible which will maintain a unified look and feel across all operating systems and browsers. And finally it provides automatic transcoding into all supported formats (OGG, H.264, MOV, FLV etc.).

is simply some HTML code that embeds a video into a website using the HTML5 <video> element, falling back to QuickTime and Flash automatically, without the use of JavaScript. It will work across all of the major browsers (including the iPhone and iPad), and can also work with most RSS readers.

It works by playing the HTML5 video, only if the browser supports it. If it doesn't, it will fallback on Quicktime, and if there is no Quicktime installed it will fallback to Flash. Finally, if all else fails, a placeholder image is shown and the user can download the video using the links provided.

Projekktor – HTML5 Video Player

Projekktor

is an easily customizable/themeable pure Javascript driven HTML5 video player, with Flash fallback only whenever there´s no native H.264 support available.
Its compatible with IE6, IE7, IE8, Firefox, Safari, Chrome and even works very well with the iPhone and iPad.
The documentation included is still rudimentary but experienced web workers will find it very easy to add the player to any project which is using the new video tag.

OSM Media Player

The Open Standard Media Player

(OSM) is an open source (GPL – license free) fully featured media player written in jQuery that can dynamically play any media thrown it's way, whether it be HTML5 video – Flash video – Audio, etc.

Primarily this media player has been developed to be used within a Content Management environment, such as Drupal, and the good news is that it can also be used as a stand alone player within your website. They have also included integration with the jQuery Themeroller

, which will allow you to customise the player allowing for CSS based customization.

The set-up guide covers the two of the most popular implementations of the Open Standard Media player: As a single media file player, and showing a playlist using an XML file.

SublimeVideo

The first thing to note about this video player is that it still, as yet, not been released for general use. What the developers have set-up though is a pre-release demo

for everyone to drool over. And drool over you will. It looks amazing and seems to works even better.

In a nutshell it is a function rich HTML5 video player that will allow you to easily embed videos in any page, blog or site using the latest modern web standards.
It works well with all the major browsers with there long term goal to make it work on all modern browsers.

Ambilight for Video Tag

looks like an average video player, the kind that loads standard HTML5 video. As the video plays, you very quickly notice what’s happening at the edges. The plugin automatically grabs the average colour in each area, and spreads it across the bounds of the video. This is not a new concept, as there have been hardware ambilights as well as Flash versions of the same. What makes this one special, is that it’s written entirely using HTML5. (Via Beautiful Pixels

CSS does a pretty darn good job of helping to lay out a web page… but not always. Even with all the versatility that CSS offers (including CSS3), it sometimes is not enough and, dare I say it, I really hate to say it – HTML

tables are on [very few] occasions missed, as they can fill in the holes that CSSes layout techniques may leave behind.

Thankfully we do not have to venture down the road of HTML tables, there is a White Knight that can save is, as it always does – there is jQuery

and its marvelous community of developers that release an endless river of powerful and always useful plugins.

jQuery Masonry

Masonry is a layout plugin for jQuery. Think of it as the flip side of CSS floats. Whereas floating arranges elements horizontally then vertically, Masonry arranges elements vertically then horizontally according to a grid. The result minimizes vertical gaps between elements of varying height, just like a mason fitting stones in a wall.

Columnizer jQuery Plugin

The Columnizer jQuery Plugin will automatically layout your content in newspaper column format. You can specify either column width or a static number of columns.
And, yes, it’s very easy to use!

UI.Layout Plug-in

This plug-in was inspired by the extJS border-layout

, and recreates that functionality as a jQuery plug-in. The UI.Layout plug-in can create any kind of UI look you need – from simple headers or sidebars, to a complex application with toolbars, menus, help-panels, status bars, sub-forms, etc.
If you combine it with other jQuery UI widgets you can easily create sophisticated applications.

jLayout

The jLayout jQuery plugin provides four layout algorithms for laying out HTML elements in web pages.
The first is border, which lays out components in five different regions. The second algorithm is grid, which lays out components in a user defined grid. The third algorithm is flexGrid, which lays out components in a grid with flexible column and row sizes. The fourth and last algorithm is flow, which lays out components in rows with components overflowing to new rows if there is not enough horizontal space.
The plugin allows you to lay out your elements with as little code as possible, and behaves correctly when used with margins, padding and borders.

jQuery pageSlide

jQuery pageSlide was inspired by the UI work of Aza Raskin. In his recent posts regarding concepts for Firefox Mobile

and a mouse-based Ubiquity

, Aza introduced the idea of sliding (or "throwing") content aside to reveal a secondary content pane.
This plugin allows any developer to recreate a similar interaction on their own website using a few simple lines of Javascript. By attaching the method to an anchor tag, pageSlide wraps the original body content into a wrapper and creates an additional block for the secondary content load. The slide is animated whenever the click event is invoked.

jMetronome Vertical Rhythm Example

A few years ago, Richard Rutter wrote Compose to a Vertical Rhythm

, which described how web developers could use CSS to maintain proper vertical typographic rhythm when designing pages. The technique is fairly straightforward, requiring some basic math to ensure consistent margins and leading across all page elements.
One issue that many people face with this technique, is that vertical rhythm can easily be thrown off by non-text elements, such as images. One solution to this issue is to make sure your images always have a height that is a multiple of the line height being used by your document, and herein lies the power of this small jQuery plugin.

Columnize

jQuery Columnize is a plugin for the Javascript library jQuery which will allow you to create a newspaper-like column layout. The original HTML code only needs small adaptions, and in most cases, it is not necessary to adapt the code at all.
For a beautiful layout it is recommended to use the CSS property ›line-height‹. By setting the line height explicitly and calculate all vertical distances as multiples of the line height you ensure that all baselines are aligned to the same grid.

While CSS3 has a variety of column-style properties, these are not yet widely implemented, and none help with the creation of page-based layouts. This jQuery plugin is designed to help with the creation of newspaper-style column layouts in HTML.
This project has the following goals: display columns filling the container allow smooth paging, without a reload smoothly adjust the page when resizing the window allow columns spanning images allow interstitial content, like quotes (todo).

jQSlickWrap – Slick text wrapping for jQuery

If you've ever felt the need to wrap stuff around an irregularly-shaped image using CSS's float, you may have been somewhat disappointed to find out that it's forced to wrap around the image's bounding box, rather than the actual contents of the image. jQSlickWrap will fix all that.

Layout Background Canvas Plugin: Gradients, Rounded Corners without CSS

The HTML5 standard introduces the <CANVAS> element, a resolution dependent bitmap canvas on which 2D graphic objects can be rendered. With JavaScript one can draw shapes like circles, rectangles and lines on this element.
The jQuery background canvas plugin injects such a canvas element behind a div or whatever block element and provides functions to draw on it. When the background of the div is made transparent, this canvas element can be seen and it will provide the new background for the div.

Equal Heights with jQuery

Creating the visual effect of equal-height columns or content boxes has been a challenge ever since the abandonment of table-based layouts.
When developing complex web applications or site designs you will find that it often makes sense from a usability and performance standpoint to use a simple JavaScript workaround: this equalHeights() function determines the heights of all sibling elements in a container, and then sets each element's minimum height to that of the tallest element.
When JavaScript is disabled, the boxes or columns appear with varying heights, but the content remains legible and the page is still completely usable.

scale9grid

This plugin adds support for scaling background images using a 9-grid. Developers can specify a grid for selected elements which causes the background-image to be scaled selectively, depending on what part of the grid the background lies.

Scroll Horizontal Pane

jScrollHorizontalPane is a plugin based off of Kevin Luck’s jScrollPane

which override’s the browsers default horizontal on any block level element with an overflow:auto style. It’s built on top of the jQuery library and uses both the dimensions plugin and the mouse wheel plugin. Provided with the download of the plugin there is a default jScrollHorizontalPane.css

which can be used as a basis to edit the stylings on the scroll bar.
